Auto robot cleaner

Robot cleaners

-these cleaners are by far the best of the bunch

They are self contained and do not rely on an outside pump in order to function

Instead, they are powered by a low-voltage supply produced by a transformer that comes as a part of the package

This type of cleaner has a waterproof cable attached to it - make sure the cable will be long enough to allow full coverage of your pool

Robot pool cleaners do an excellent job of cleaning; as you might expect from the most expensive type of auto-cleaner

At the lower end of the market the various models wander about at random, in the same way that suction-side and pressure-side cleaners do, but some of the more expensive models have an on-board computer that 'learns' the pool shape and sets about cleaning it all in a very thorough manner

Some robots have on-board rechargeable batteries, thus doing away with the cable and allowing the cleaner to be used in a pool with, say, an 'island' bar without the fear of a cable becoming tangled

Other models have a floating antenna for radio-control so that the cleaner can be steered into specific areas of the pool

Robot cleaners have their own on-board motor and filters

Usually the filter is a mesh bag that catches leaves, insects and other particles down to about 40 microns. Any particles smaller than that are placed in suspension in the pool - where there is a fighting chance that the regular circulation/filtration system will eventually grab them

Some models are better than others at climbing the walls and scrubbing the waterline

Very often the manufacturers  have a different set of brushes for each type of pool surface (e.g. tiles, cement. fibreglass, vinyl liner) and theTiger Shark Robot Cleaner purchaser must ensure that their cleaner will perform well on their particular pool-surface

Advantages of Robot Pool Cleaners

  • Do not rely on the circulation pump and can therefore be used at any time
  • Very quiet in operation

Probably the best investment when compared to other types of cleaners

Disadvantages of Robot Pool Cleaners

  • Do not remove the tiny particles - however, they are placed in suspension in the water and left to the filter to capture
  • Have mesh bag-filters that need to be emptied and hosed off regularly
  • Are the most expensive type of cleaner

Pressure cleaners

- are powered by the water that is returned to the pool after filtration, or by a separate, dedicated pump

Either it fits onto one of the return jets or it is attached to its own dedicated return socket on the side of the pool

They spread clean filtered water around the pool and, because they have their own debris bag, the dirt/debris does not get into the pump strainer and pool filter which reduces the need to clean the filter and thus saves time and water

Even when the bag is full a pressure cleaner still disturbs dust on the bottom and puts it in suspension in the pool - giving the regular filter a fighting chance of catching it

Advantages of a Pressure-side cleaner with dedicated pump

  • Reduces time between backwashes therefore saves water
  • Is unaffected by a clogged pool filter
  • Improves circulation and overall distribution of filtered water

Disadvantages of a Pressure-side cleaner with dedicated pump

  • A separate pump is an extra expense, both to purchase and to operate
  • Inefficient at cleaning walls

Advantages of a Pressure-side cleaner with non-dedicated pump

  • Reduces time between backwashes therefore saves water
  • Some models are a little cheaper than other cleaners, but not much
  • Cheaper to install as no separate dedicated pipe-work is required
  • Is unaffected by a clogged pool filter
  • Improves circulation and overall distribution of filtered water

Disadvantages of a Pressure-side cleaner with dedicated pump

  • Not very good at catching small particles
  • Not very efficient at scrubbing pool surfaces

suction auto cleaner

Suction Cleaners

- powered by the suction of the pools circulation pump most, if not all suction-side cleaners have a mechanism that causes the cleaning head to 'judder', jerk or wobble its way around the pool completely at random, cleaning the vast majority of the surfaces that it is designed to reach

The suction hoses are supplied in short lengths of around 1.2m (4 ft) that connect together

  • The number of lengths required depends on the size of the pool being cleaned but most manufacturers recommend that there should be sufficient overall hose-length to reach the furthest part of the pool (i.e. furthest from the suction point) plus one extra length of hose
  • The random nature of the path around the pool means that most suction-side cleaners miss a bit here and there but you can do something about that: -
  • Once the device has cleaned most of the floor area simply grab hold of the hose (turn the pump off first) and separate any 2 lengths of hose
  • Twist one length through 90-degrees and then re-connect the 2 lengths
  • This has the effect of imparting a different 'dynamic' to the hose and now it will allow the cleaner to wander off on a different random path and with a bit of luck the areas that were missed first time round will now be cleaned

When the cleaner is not in use

  • Separate the hose into sections and lay the sections out flat
  • If a hose is left coiled it will retain the curve in use and could affect the efficiency
  • Remove any auto-cleaner from the water when the pool is in use

Advantages of a Suction-side Pool Cleaner

  • Usually the least expensive auto-cleaner to install as it requires no additional plumbing or pump
  • Many models incorporate a scrubbing action on pool surfaces which may reduce the need for you to brush walls and floors manually
  • Deposits the debris directly into the pump strainer and the dirt directly into the filter

Disadvantages of a Suction-side Pool Cleaner

  • Sometimes they are fiddly to set up as they depend on the degree of suction from the pump
  • Too much suction will crush the hose, too little suction and they don't work at all
  • As the filter clogs with particles that have been removed by the cleaner the suction drops off and the cleaner may stop working until the filter has been cleaned
  • Often get caught up in corners or behind steps
  • In pools that are surrounded by trees the pump strainer can rapidly fill with leaves unless an in-line leaf catcher is installed in the hose
