Non-Chlorine Shock

- an alternative to Superchlorination

  • The active ingredient in non-chlorine shock products is potassium peroxymonosulphate, also known as permonosulphate
  • Permonosulphates oxidize by using the element from which oxidation derives its name - oxygen. Oxygen is a pure form of oxidizer
  • Like Chlorine, permonosulphate is an oxidizer that destroys organic contaminants such as ammonia in swimming pools
  • However, permonosulphate compounds do not kill or sanitize; they only control organics and the restrict the production of chloramines
  • This allows the Chlorine to do its job as a sanitizer
  • Unlike superchlorination, which is carried out to cure water problems such as strong odours or eye and skin irritation after they occur, permonosulphates are effective in preventing these problems from developing because they do not contain Chlorine
  • Instead, they oxidize waste through the use of oxygen
  • They do not go through the various stages of chloramine formation to achieve chlorination breakpoint, but react directly with the ammonia to produce chloride and nitrogen
  • No matter how little of the Non-chlorine shock you add, at least some of the organic contaminants will be destroyed, and no additional chloramines will be formed
  • This overcomes one possible danger of superchlorination, namely that of overdosing
  • If a pool is 'overdosed' with a Non-chlorine shock it doesn't really matter; swimming can be resumed after the permonosulphate has been diluted, after 30 minutes or so with the pump running
  • In fact, the excess permonosulphate will remain in the water, and be there ready to destroy any contaminants that may enter the pool from bather waste and other sources
  • Permonosulphates are 100-percent soluble and will not leave a residue or bleach vinyl liners or swimming suits
  • Because they are not Chlorine-based, it is not necessary to calculate how much to add to beat a given chloramines problem
  • Permonosulphates help prevent chloramines from forming, so whatever quantity is applied will have some positive benefit
  • Unlike superchlorination, which requires you to calculate how much Chlorine to add to correct problems, and how often to do so, permonosulphates are generally added at the rate of 700g per 50m³ (1 pint per 10,000 US Gal) on a weekly basis
  • Permonosulphates are effective at controlling the formation of the chloramines which cause odours, reduce disinfection and cause eye and skin irritation
  • Permonosulphates have a low pH of about 2.3 to 3 and can cause an acidic condition to occur, so steps must to be taken to counteract this if it occurs by application of pH-plus powder/granules
  • Permonosulphates are also safer to store and handle than chlorine products, because they will not ignite or release chlorine gas

Permonosulphates are, unfortunately, more expensive than liquid Chlorine. That’s life!
